William Mortensen Vaughan is a retired U.S. Army Staff Sergeant, who served with the Tenth Mountain Light Infantry Division in Afghanistan and Iraq, during Operations Enduring Freedom VII and Iraqi Freedom VI.

While serving in Afghanistan in the winter of 2006 and '07, he attended a theatrical rendition of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, performed by fellow Service Members, as well as civilians, at the Base Chapel on Bagram Airfield. He enjoyed this rendition, and it reminded him of the adaptations, such as Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol, which he watched, with his mother, on television, year after year, as a child. His mother had also given him a printed copy of the novel, which he read. Reminded of such fond, childhood memories, by the play in Afghanistan, William started collecting copies of such adaptations on DVD and VHS, especially while serving in Iraq, in the winter of 2008 and '09. His personal collection soon included copies of dozens of adaptations.
